Retrofitting Rexroth Motors with DMM Encoders

We have recently completed a project for a customer, where we retrofitted Rexroth motors with our advanced encoders to integrate with our DYN5 drives. This email highlights the technical processes and considerations involved in enhancing the functionality and performance of this customer’s existing systems. Project Overview The motors used for this retrofit included: Y Axis: 2 x Rexroth MSK050B-0600-NN-M1-UG0-NNNN X Axis: 1 x Rexroth MSK040B-0600-NN-M1-UP0-NNNN Z Axis: 1 x Rexroth MSK040C-0600-NN-M1-UP1-NNNN (with brake) Retrofitting Process The retrofit involved replacing the existing encoders with DMM encoders, designed to work with our DYN5 drives. Here are some key aspects of the process: 1. Encoder Mounting: The retrofit required a custom mounting solution, fabricated from heat-resistant PETG carbon fiber-infused plastic. This choice of material ensures durability and stability in various operating environments​​. 2. Magnet Mount: We machined a custom encoder magnet mount from 6061-T6 aluminum. This component is crucial for maintaining precision and reliability during motor operation​​. 3. Wiring Integration: A significant advantage of this retrofit was the preservation of the stock wiring connectors. By soldering the encoder wiring to retain factory plugs, the process allows the use of existing Rexroth cables, minimizing disruption and ensuring a seamless integration​​. Technical Enhancements Drive Compatibility: The integration with DYN5 drives enhances motor capabilities, including EtherCAT support, which facilitates improved control and communication in automated systems​​. Voltage Adaptation: The project also addressed the compatibility of motor voltage. Originally rated for 400VAC, the motors are now configured to operate effectively at 240VAC with the DYN5 drive. This setup supports a maximum motor speed of 3000 RPM, aligning with torque requirements​​. While this email is certainly a pat on the back for DMM, we wanted to share this project as it reflects our technical expertise and commitment to customer satisfaction.
